STRAWBERRY: 15th February 2008

I'm a soft touch for a forlorn plant.

Another 'reduced' supermarket product that caught my eye. Last years strawberries were a tadge on the small side, nice but small, perhaps I'll be able to buy that carton of cream this year?

A variety known as 'Temptation' or so it says on the box, sounds more like a challenge to me. I've planted four, two as is and two with my custom 'bottle propagator'

April 21

Slow is the word here, the greenhouse is left open to harden them off a bit

Those I put in a basket a couple of weeks ago have done . . . nothing. It's interesting to note that those with some weather protection are almost twice the size. Despite 'Global warming' its still too early for those more delicate (including me!)

'Here's some I made earlier'

Two plants from a garden centre at 89p a couple of weeks age and they are already flowering.

April 5th

Here they are, real strawberries, just need to paint them red.

May 14

The garden centre plants are jumping hoops (not literally), three almost ripe strawb's hang temptingly before me and bless, it's thrown out a couple of shoots for good luck.

May 20th

My oh my, these were worth every penny, the Garden Centre strawberries proved to be a hit, well the first three anyway, and there's more on the way.

May 25

'Temptation' was the name of the reduced price seedlings bought from the supermarket that didn't even make the effort to rise above the rim of the flower pots, well now they have (just) and a flower pops out to say 'Hello, I'm not dead'.

July really is being a fruitful month, temptation as it's known is producing at last, the fruits are large, very large and juicy. Fruiting randomly means I can pop outside and eat one when to mood takes me.

  In Conclusion:

It's easy to grow strawberries at home, no real maintenance needed if in hanging baskets or pots above ground level. You'll have to plant a lot to fill a bowl of course but I favour the 'Oh there's one I'll eat it' method, unless you have children of course then you'll never see them. ( told mine they were poisonous . . . snigger).

Easiest if grown from small plants from a garden centre

Can I Eat It = Oh yes
