Walking Stick Cabbage - Jersey Kale

Yes you did read that right. there is a type of cabbage that can be made in to walking sticks, honest. Known as a Jersey Kale (after the channel island Jersey) it can be grown up to around six feet in height but known to have reached much higher. It's not really edible as such and is more of a novelty these days. It will take about a year or two to reach it's full height. I planted one last year and it grew . . . sort of. Attacked by caterpillars left right and centre it's a magnet for  disaster (in my garden anyway) but my short deformed specimen did go to seed and I've saved them. More info here

 Last years attempt

This year . . . Gone to seed.

 Second Generation!

July 17th: Well I didn't expect that to work at all.

I planted 3 of the seeds from the pods above and really didn't expect anything to happen, in fact, by the end of the week I expected to have a flowerpot full of . . . soil.
Sometimes I wonder if these things happen just to spite me?
