Tomatoes

Hello Stalky!

When I planted these seeds I didn't know what they were, I had thrown the original packaging away last year and was left with a small unlabeled foil packet of unknown origin, they turned out to be tomatoes.

Now these are meant to be one of the easiest things to grow, even for me. My first attempt ended up with Stalky here (pictured on the left) not a good start. I started again.

July 1st: Time for a small update on the toms, I seem to have them growing all over the place at the moment. The grow bag sample seem to be doing well whilst those in a pot are a little larger I think. The weather for the past week has been a mixture of rain and wind but they seem to have stood up well, not lost any.

July 17th: I really do wish I liked Tomatoes, they have started to produce these furry little buds that I assume  are going to turn in to the fruit itself, now, is a tom a fruit or a veg, not sure.

I have learnt to remove any growth that forms in the 'v' of two stems (shown left) it promotes growth elsewhere apparently.

July 21st: Hi Buddy, it's starting to flower.

July 27th: Small disaster, strong winds (it's summer remember) and the potted toms got blown over and two of the four plants got broken, one is 100% dead and severed, one broken and splinted and two seem OK.

August 5th: We have a tomato, sort of.

OK, it's only half an inch across but it's on the tomato plant so it must be a tomato right.

It's ironic that the plants I looked after more carefully (yes, the ones that fell over and broke), struggled to produce flowers whilst all the time around the corner in with the runner beans this little beauty appears.

I have been checking every day hoping to catch the very first inkling of fruit and I've been caught out, typical isn't it.

August 12th: More.

As soon as I turn my back, up they pop, there's about four toms now and potential for a lot more.

August 18th: Everything's coming up roses (well, tomatoes!)

From the proud moment of finding the first sign of a tomato we're now looking at them popping up all over the place.
About 8 are 'in production'.

August to September 14th:

To be honest, not a lot happened, they just grew on slowly.
Just one has started to show any signs of colour.

September 14th:

Needed to know what was going on inside, so I had a look!

Sept 24th:

We have tomatoes, well, two but it's a start. Here we are just edging in to winter weather (autumn might be skipped over to save time) and my toms are ripening . . . . . at last.

October 4th: Well, that's about it, out of the 30 to 40 possible tomatoes only one reached full size and colour, the rest remain green and is probably too late to ripen. It has been a good try and I'm sure I will plant a couple more next year - much earlier.
