Can I Eat It

Diary of a man who just planted some seeds for fun . . . and they grew!

WINTERING:

September the 24th 2007 and the garden is dying. The growing season is drawing to a close, it's staggered on in fits and starts throughout September and I've watched things grow, ripen and die (ok, mostly die) but it's been an education.

I'm looking forward to dissecting the fruits of my labour as I let the plants literally go to seed to see what happens. I think there's about 2 months to go before the end and updates will be on the slow side (what do you mean you've noticed)

Looking forward to next year (check the 'Next year' link) where I start all over again with some interesting stuff. Jimmy

It started as a bit of fun for the children, we planted some seeds and expected . . . nothing, and generally we weren't disappointed, the only green fingers here come from painting not planting. Follow this diary of a hazy unsure non-gardener. Click the pics!

This is not a guide to growing various plants, I am not an expert, in fact I didn't even know what I had planted in some cases.
The key words here are, neglect, cheap, lazy and food. I also forget to read instructions.

OK, what’s it all about then, what set me, a generally non-garden type person, in to this almost avid gardener then . . . I wish I knew, must be something in the water.

Last year I had a bit of a competition with a friend, we would see what we could grow to eat in a typical small garden using what was available and only using seeds. We had plans to use discarded shopping trolleys for potatoes, old paint pots for herbs and plastic milk bottles for sweet peppers. It was a half-hearted attempt except for the potatoes and peppers that actually grew.

This year I’m playing again but being as cost effective as possible but this has its problems. I’m growing stacks of stuff and I get to a point that I’ve got no where to put them as they out-grow my home made seed trays. Grow bags came to the rescue, old plant troths donated by relatives and the odd bucket or two. The mini-green house has been a marvel.

I have no idea what I’m doing, my knowledge extends only to what’s written on the back of the packet, and most of it is pure luck. My garden at the back of our small terraced house is half grass and half raised concrete and so the conditions call for a containerised garden but I want to make it both unusual and practical, that’s why the potatoes are growing in a large waste bag!
