Carrots

June 27th: have you ever seen carrot seeds, I didn't even know they had flowers in the first place, guess they must. Not a fan of carrots myself but after a complete failure last year I am determined to try again, why do I pick stuff that creatures other than humans love to eat I wonder

July 4th: Signs of life. Are these carrots I see before me! yes they are, bless 'em. July 5th: Bingo!.
Overnight and they have gone mad, popping up everywhere.

July 7th: And there under starters orders . . .

 . . . their off . . .

July 15th:
Lift and separate. Time to take the plunge and plant the things.

August 5th: hmm, real carrots, now they actually look like the real thing, well the tops do. I have been informed that they will be ready when you can start to see the orange carrot tops showing.

September 7th: look, carrots!

Oh the temptation to dig these up now,
stop it, STOP IT.

What's wrong, have you never seen a carrot doing Yoga before!

OK, so I couldn't wait to dig at least one carrot up, I mean, I needed some sort of growth gauge to judge the others by.

Yes I know it looks like a prawn but at least it made the effort.

September 14th: Welcome to the ugly bunch.

Short, stumpy, misshapen, call them what you like I don't care, their all freaks. Not one reached full carrot shape or size.

Disappointed yes I suppose I was, I had expected greater things, I mean, how hard can it be.

This is the best it gets.

As you can see, it started off with the best intensions but lost enthusiasm after the first two inches.

I don't know what went wrong and am starting to wonder if they knew the box i had planted them in was only six inches deep (I only wanted six inch carrots. I may try again next year but much much deeper.

I do still have a bunch left on the garden, literally a bunch, all planted in one six inch patch, these I'm going to leave and see what happens, no tending, no care and just the occasional splash of water, will they go to seed i wonder?
