CUSTARD APPLE: February 23rd

December 5th 2007: I know, I know, what the hells a Custard apple anyway, is it an apple that tastes like custard? well sort of, it's similar to an apple, I mean it's green (mostly) sort of apple shaped (in a way) and grows on trees (I think) but I do know . . it tastes very very nice.

Bought from a supermarket, tasted and seeds kept and dried (in a pocket) I planted them in early December in a pot on the window sill indoors . . . lets see what happens.

They failed to grow, not entirely surprised at that seeing it's not suitable for our climate but you know what it's like, find a seed
and plant it . . . just in case and sometimes it works. I would recommend looking out for these things in your local supermarket, it's a taste experience for all the family.

SCRAP THAT, IT'S ALL WRONG

IT LIVES:

Anyone who has been following the growth of 'Thing' will by now know I made a mistake. I planted a stone seed on top of what I thought were dead seeds.

I was fooled (easily done with me) I thought the growth was from the stone but was in fact the not quite dead Custard Apple seeds.

(I have of course chastised myself)

The bad news was that the top fell off, taking with it the two primary leaves that were trapped in the pod. The main stalk survived but I don't know if there is enough for it to recover, so it still might be dead Just out of curiosity I opened the decapitated pod to reveal an alien like growth inside.

26th February

Despite all my efforts to stifle life from this thing it's fighting back, bless it. March 5th and we've grown a couple of decent size leaves at this rate by next month it will be walking!

Hello hello, what's all this then, is that another sprout I see, did I plant 3 seeds I wonder. March 23rd:

Progress on the other seed now but it still refuses to lift it's head out of the sand (not that there is any). The main plant has lost yet another leaf . . . again.

March 26th

It's done the same as last time, raised its head shaped thing but this time I'm not going to touch it . . . just watch.
